What are Ballistic Shields?

Ballistic Shields are handheld protective barriers designed to provide mobile cover for individuals operating in dangerous situations, such as active shooter events, hostage rescues, or military combat. These shields are commonly used by SWAT teams, law enforcement officers, and security personnel to approach threats safely while minimizing the risk of injury.

Constructed from materials like Kevlar, composite ceramics, or polyethylene, ballistic shields are rated based on their ability to stop specific types of ammunition, following standards such as those from the National Institute of Justice (NIJ). Some shields are designed to resist handgun rounds (Level IIIA), while others can stop rifle fire (Level III or IV).

Ballistic shields often feature a transparent viewport to provide visibility, allowing officers to see the threat without exposing themselves. Many also include handles, forearm straps, and even lighting systems for low-visibility conditions. In tactical scenarios, these shields are used to protect the lead officer during building entries or confrontations with armed suspects.

Training with ballistic shields helps individuals learn how to balance protection and maneuverability, ensuring effective movement and teamwork under pressure.
