What is Blank Ammunition?

Blank ammunition, or blanks, are cartridges designed to produce the sound and recoil of real gunfire without discharging a bullet. They contain gunpowder and sometimes a wadding or crimped closure at the tip to contain the charge. Blanks are used in various settings, including firearms training, military drills, movie productions, and ceremonial events such as salutes or reenactments.

In tactical training, blanks help simulate realistic shooting scenarios without the risks associated with live rounds. Law enforcement and military personnel use blank ammunition during active shooter drills and force-on-force exercises to practice handling firearms under pressure while maintaining safety. Special adapters, known as blank-firing adapters (BFA), are often installed on firearms to allow proper cycling with blanks.

Although blank ammunition is safer than live rounds, it still poses some risks, such as burns or injuries from muzzle gases or close-range discharge. Therefore, proper safety measures, including protective gear and controlled environments, are necessary when using blanks in training.
