What is Breach and Clear?
Breach and Clear is a methodical and high-risk tactic employed by law enforcement, military, and SWAT teams to enter and secure rooms or buildings where threats may be present. It involves breaching an entry point—such as a door or window—followed by a rapid and coordinated movement to clear the area of any armed suspects or hazards. This technique is critical in hostage rescues, counter-terrorism missions, and active shooter situations, where speed and precision are vital.
The breach phase involves using tools such as battering rams, explosives, or shotguns to forcefully open a locked or fortified entry point. Once inside, the clearing team uses practiced movements to identify, engage, and neutralize any threats, while minimizing harm to civilians or hostages. Communication, teamwork, and situational awareness are crucial during a Breach and Clear operation to prevent friendly fire and ensure the mission’s success.
Training for Breach and Clear operations often includes firearms handling, room-clearing drills, and practice with breaching tools. Simulations using blank ammunition or non-lethal rounds are commonly employed to provide a realistic environment while ensuring safety.
