What is Reality Based Training?
Reality Based Training (RBT) is a training methodology that immerses participants in realistic, high-pressure scenarios designed to mimic situations they may encounter in the field. This type of training is commonly used by law enforcement, military, and security personnel to practice decision-making, tactical responses, and use of force in lifelike environments. RBT uses a combination of role-playing, simulated weapons, and protective gear to create scenarios that closely replicate the unpredictability and stress of real-world encounters.
Scenarios in Reality Based Training can include active shooter drills, domestic disturbance responses, hostage situations, and high-risk traffic stops. The focus is on developing critical thinking, communication, and the ability to maintain control under extreme stress. Trainees engage with actors or other participants who behave unpredictably, helping officers practice how to de-escalate conflicts, identify threats, or engage in combat when necessary.
One key component of RBT is the use of non-lethal training ammunition or simulated weapons like paintball markers or “Simunition” rounds, which allows participants to safely practice their skills in environments that feel authentic. This type of training builds confidence, enhances tactical decision-making, and ensures that participants can respond effectively to real-life situations with a focus on safety and appropriate force.
