What is TQ (Tourniquet)?
A TQ (Tourniquet) is a life-saving medical device used to control severe bleeding from a limb by constricting blood flow. In tactical and emergency settings, a tourniquet is often one of the first interventions applied when a person suffers a traumatic injury, such as a gunshot wound or other deep lacerations that cause heavy bleeding. The device works by wrapping tightly around an arm or leg and applying enough pressure to stop blood flow to the injured area, preventing further blood loss.
In firearms training and high-risk environments, a TQ is a critical component of first-aid kits like the IFAK (Individual First Aid Kit). Proper training on the use of a tourniquet is essential, as incorrect application can cause tissue damage. However, when used correctly, a TQ can save lives by preventing fatal blood loss in situations where immediate professional medical care is not available.
Tourniquets are especially vital in combat or active shooter scenarios, where injuries are common, and rapid medical response is critical. They are designed for quick application, allowing individuals to treat themselves or others in high-stress, high-stakes environments.
