What is Trigger Control?

Trigger control is the technique used to press the trigger of a firearm without disturbing the aim. It plays a critical role in shooting accuracy and is a fundamental skill for anyone handling firearms, from beginners to experienced professionals. Proper trigger control involves applying steady and consistent pressure until the shot is fired, rather than jerking or slapping the trigger, which can cause the shot to miss its mark.

In firearms training, learning trigger control helps shooters maintain precision, especially in high-stress situations. This skill ensures that the firearm remains steady throughout the process, minimizing any disruption to aim caused by abrupt trigger movement.

Proper trigger control includes mastering the “trigger press” and “trigger reset.” The trigger press refers to the smooth and gradual pressure applied to the trigger until the firearm discharges, while the reset is the controlled release of the trigger just enough to fire subsequent shots without losing grip or aim.

For shooters using both live ammunition and training guns (such as those equipped with lasers), improving trigger control is key to developing consistent, accurate shooting performance.
